Home computing guide
A new computer is easier to settle into when you plan what needs to move across. Start with the files, accounts and everyday tasks that matter, rather than assuming everything will transfer automatically.
Make a list before you start
Note the applications you use, email accounts, printer and other accessories. Find important photographs, documents and files saved outside the usual folders. Check whether essential applications support the new computer and whether you have the licences or subscriptions you need.
Make a separate backup
Keep a separate copy of important files before changing the old computer. Confirm that recent files are included and open a few copies to check them. Our guide to backing up photos and documents explains what to consider.
Set up accounts securely
Keep access to the email address and phone number used for account recovery. Enter passwords and verification codes yourself; do not send them through a contact form or email. Set up available security updates and account protection before relying on the new machine.
Check files and applications separately
Copying documents does not normally install the applications that open them. Arrange suitable installers and licences, then check that the files open correctly. Email, browser bookmarks and cloud folders may each need their own setup. Confirm what is actually downloaded and what is only available online.
Try your normal tasks
Check email, printing, video calls and the applications you use regularly. Connect to your home Wi-Fi and test the rooms where you work. See our broadband and router setup service if devices need reconnecting.
Keep the old computer until you have checked
Avoid erasing or disposing of the old machine until you are satisfied that important files and accounts are accessible and backed up. Before passing it on, arrange appropriate removal of personal data for that device.
