Home computing guide

Wi-Fi working near the router but struggling upstairs usually needs a look at coverage inside the home. Start by separating the incoming broadband connection from the wireless network that carries it to your devices.

Compare the same device in different rooms

Try a normal task close to the router, then in the room where the connection is poor. Note where it changes and whether other devices behave similarly. This gives us more useful information than a single speed result.

Give the router room to work

Keep it in an open position where practical, rather than inside a cupboard or behind large objects. A more central, raised position can help reduce obstructions. Thick walls, floors and the distance to upstairs rooms can affect the signal. Do not move fixed cabling or disconnect equipment you are unsure about.

A booster is not always the next step

A mesh system or an additional access point may suit some properties, but equipment needs sensible placement and a reliable connection back to the router. Discuss the layout and the rooms you need to cover before buying.

What to tell us

We can help review the connection and discuss suitable improvements. Explore our home Wi-Fi support or request a callback.
